School Overview
(English Summary)

Chiba City's Masago Dai-ichi Junior High School was opened in April 1973 as the first lower secondary school to be located in Kemigawa district of Kai-hin New Town; a residential district newly developed in early 70's on a spacious flat land area reclaimed from waters in Tokyo Bay. This area is also close (only a few miles away across Hanamigawa River) to 'Makuhari Messe,' a new business center featured with international convention/exhibition halls, high-rise office buildings and modern hotels.

A municipal public school, the Masago Dai-ichi Junior High School has a student body of 234 (as of May 1, 2010), including 84 students (49 boys and 35 girls) in its first-year class (equivalent to 7th grade in American school system), 75 students (44 boys and 31 girls) in the second-year class (8th grade) and 75 students (38 boys and 37 girls) in the 3rd year class (9th grade).

Whereas the neighboring community has been developed primarily as a residential area for people having jobs in Tokyo and its vicinities, a large number of independent houses, condominiums and apartment houses have been built one after another, together with a variety of stores and other amenities for daily life. This led to continued increase in town population as well as the number of students enrolled in this school in the 80's. The number of our students increased from only 13 in the initial 1973 class to 809 in 1986, the peak year. However, enrollment started to decline thereafter (see the chart below), just as in many other schools in the country.

Parents as well as many other citizens in the local community care much about sound development of young people. Students' parents organized an "Association of Parents" in 1983 to work together in various school activities. In addition, a "Committee on Youth Upbringing" has been organized by representatives of local community to support school activities from outside. Then, in 2006 parents and teachers established a PTA to achieve a wide range of educational goals for the students.

As for faculty staff, Masago Dai-ichi Junior High School has 28 teachers including Principal and Vice Principal.

GOAL: As a goal, our students are always encouraged to be 'broad-minded,' 'creative' and 'vigorous'.
To that end, they are inspired to:

  1. Be self-dependent in identifying and resolving problems. (Independence)
  2. Work with others cooperatively so as to bring given tasks to successful completion. (Collaboration)
  3. Learn to be healthy, stout-hearted and rich in aesthetic sentiments. (Discipline)
  4. Appreciate labor, love your school and the local community, and make services to society. (Volunteering)
